The Transbay Joint Powers Authority was created to design, build, operate and maintain a new transportation terminal (The Transbay Transit Center) and associated facilities to replace the old Transbay Terminal, constructed in 1939. This project is called The Transit Center Program.
The Transit Center Disctrict is a current planning effort of the San Francisco Planning Department. It encompasses the "New Heart of San Francisco" as envisioned by the writers of the 1985 Downtown Plan--the area around the Transbay Terminal. This includes the Transbay Transit Center and the Transbay Redevelopment Project Area.
The Transit Center District Plan will include mechanisms to direct increased development values to fund the construction of the Transit Center Program in addition to other improvements.
OPEN SPACE IN THE TRANSIT CENTER DISTRICT PLAN
Initial Findings and Proposals were presented at a meeting on April 30, 2008. These included plans for the Open Space & Streetscape elements of the plan. Highlights--a new Open Space on the Northern corner of Second and Howard Streets, new Living Streets, wider sidewalks, and lane removals! TRANSIT CENTER DISTRICT TIMELINE
A Public Workshop to discuss Concept Refinements, Public Benefits/Financial Plan Concepts, and Sustainability Issues will be held this summer (2008).
A Public Workshop to discuss Final Proposals will be held in the late Summer/early Fall of 2008.
